Fur Rondy

Fur Rendezous was started in 1935 as a 3 day sports tournament with a bonfire and a torchlight parade. It was so the locals could trade and mingle with the miners and trappers. Since then it has grown and evolved into a yearly event all the locals look very forward to. We decided to go downtown yesterday to explore the festivities ourselves. This year they have ice bowling, fur auctions, raindeer races, a carnival, snow carving, snowshoe softball, a parade (the final event next Sunday and we plan on being there!!) and much more!! It was a little chilly (5 degrees) but very worth it :)

This is the Balto statue. I know wrong event, the Iditarod starts next Saturday (we plan on seeing that too!).
Raindeer racing! Who knew?? They harness the raindeer, put on some skiis and grab a rope! It is pretty entertaining I have to say. Snow carving. Just as neat as the ice carving. Amazingly creative and unique! At the carnival the kids were asked to play this game for free while the local news station did their broadcast. Needless to say they were thrilled! Sammy came in 2nd :)
